I ride from Asheville to Black Mtn several times a week to get to work. Almost every morning a big yellow school bus pulls up behind me on Old US 70, and refuses to pass. This is a two lane road, with lots of straight portions, plenty of room to pass, and great line of sight. I wave her around, motion for her, slow down, ride the white line etc. Still she doesn't pass, even with 15 cars and trucks caught behind here.
Today I pulled into the school to find out why she does not pass. She informed me that it is illegal for them to cross the double yellow line on a two lane road and she would have to cross that line to pass me safely. And if she did pass me and hit me, she would lose her job. That makes sense. She also mentioned a co-worker who has a route on Town Mtn and encoutners the same issue.
So, what to do? In order to help the flow of traffic and demonstrate that I care, I will briefly pull into a driveway when a school bus gets behind me, and let them pass.
