Headed out early Saturday morning with Tommy Davis and new teammate Jay Westbrook. Being a short race and a combined 35+ field, we knew that we needed to get there early for a good warm up. Between a wreck on I-40 and construction traffic, we got our numbers and headed straight to the line...no warm up.
It was a large, star studded field. This was Carolina Master's race and they had a full team. The first two laps were ballistic with the CM Team firing bullet after bullet. On one of the harder hills, Tommy dropped a chain. I held up to help him catch back on. Tommy had to dismount to fix the chain with the field quickly riding away. Tommy, thinking I had been dropped on the climb(normally a pretty good assumption) sprinted past me. The good news is he got back on...I did not.
By the time Tommy caught back on and worked his way up, a very dangerous move of six riders had a gap. Some how, Jay made his way across to the break. Carolina Masters had three out of the seven with; Charlie Brown, John Patterson and Ryan Jenkins. This trio has been unbeatable! Also in the break; Jay Charles, Pete Cannell and Gordon Stiel.
The seven work together to stay away. It came down to a sprint with Ryan Jenkins leading it out. The finish: 1-Jay Charles 2-Pete Cannell 3-Charlie Brown 4-John Patterson 5-Jay Westbrook An incredible finish in such a strong field.
Tommy had fired a lot of bullets and rolled in mid field.

"Some how, Jay made his way across to the break."
I know how... by supreme effort! You and I know these guys well - Jay must have been bleeding by the time he got to 'em. Ouch.
I can't believe all 3 of the CM guys got beat. Wazzupwithat?
